It is important to note this when reviewing the responses. A "U" or "undecided" does not mean that the candidate is unsympathetic to our issues but requires more information. RECOGNITION OF GREEK SOVEREIGN TERRITORY IN THE AEGEAN

The maritime borders as between Greece and Turkey in the Aegean have been long established by international treaties and law dating from the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne. Alone in the international community, Turkey does not recognize the delineation of these borders but raises unilateral claims to certain Greek territories, including the islets of Imia and others. 

At its December 10-11, 1999 Council meeting in Helsinki, the European Union required Turkey to resolve its territorial claims in the Aegean “within a reasonable time.” To date, Turkey has taken no steps to do so.

On July 21, 1999 the House of Representatives passed by unanimous voice vote Amendment 19 to H.R. 2415 (the State Department authorization bill), expressing the “Sense of Congress…that:

1. the water boundaries established in the Treaty of Lausanne of 1923 and the 1932 Convention between Italy and Turkey, including the Protocol annexed to such Convention, are the borders between Greece and Turkey in the Aegean; and
2. any party, including Turkey, objecting to these established boundaries should seek redress in the International Court of Justice at The Hague.”

All amendments to H.R.2415 were removed in the Conference Committee. On May 25, 2000 Representative Robert Andrews introduced H.Con.Res.340 regarding the Aegean Sea. It is similar to Amendment 19 of H.R. 2415.
