BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION Costas Stassinopoulos played a leading role in Greece's most turbulent decades. He was born in Athens in May 1919. His primary and secondary education was at the Leonteion Lykeion and the Varvakeion School. He studied law at the University of Athens and political science at the Panteion University. From 1941 to 44 and 1945 to 50, he was a university tutor under Professor Grigoris Kassimatis and a legal researcher at the Panteion. Mr. Stassinopoulos worked actively in the National Resistance. During the German occupation, together with Professor Kassimatis, he published the underground newspaper To Paron (The Present) and helped in the publication of the newspaper Doxa (Glory). He was arrested by the German forces in February 1944, imprisoned at the Haidari camp in Athens, then moved in May 1944 to Neugammen and Beendorf concentration camps in Germany. After his return to Greece in August 1945, he became General Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, while serving as director of the weekly newspaper To Paron (The Present). In June 1949, he began publication of the newspaper O Hronos, (The Times) which throughout the period of its publication was a strong voice in the effort to revive the Greek economy. At the same time, he founded and directed and managed a consulting firm, which was active in both the public and private sector until 1995. Mr. Stassinopoulos has two daughters Arianna and Agapi and two granddaughters Christina and Isabella. The Foreword is written by Arianna Stassinopoulos Huffington, a nationally syndicated columnist and author. She is also the chair of the Center for Effective Compassion, dedicated to reinvigorating our communities and institutions and promoting greater citizen involvement in the solution of social problems. She has authored six books: The Female Woman, After Reason, Maria Callas: The Woman Behind the Legend, The Gods of Greece and Picasso: Creator and Destroyer. During the Republican and Democratic conventions in 1996, as well as on election night, Arianna teamed up with Al Franken to provide political coverage for Comedy Central. |
