The Honorable Albert Gore, Jr.
Gore 2000
601 Mainstream Drive
Nashville, TN 37228
Attention: Mr. Mark Massanbaugh

Dear Vice-President Gore:

I am writing to you on behalf of the American Hellenic Institute Public Affairs Committee (AHIPAC), to follow-up on a letter we sent to you on February 10, 2000 soliciting your views on certain aspects of U.S. foreign policy in the Eastern Mediterranean and Southeast Europe regions. AHIPAC is one of the leading membership-based organizations of the Greek American community in the United States.

AHIPAC has a nationwide membership and regional chapter structure. The organization's mandate is to promote awareness of American interests in the Eastern Mediterranean and Southeast Europe regions. Our overriding principles in addressing these issues are the rule of law and to promote the best interests of the United States. Explication of AHIPAC's mission and objectives is contained in the enclosed Greek American Policy Statements of July 1, 2000.

We focus on three principal areas:

  1. Greece's role as the key partner for advancing U.S. regional interests;
  2. The search for a just resolution of the Cyprus problem in accordance with democratic principles and UN resolutions; and
  3. Turkey's failure to abide by the rule of law and democratic norms, both in its relations with Greece and Cyprus, in its domestic affairs regarding minority and human rights.

We would be grateful if you would complete the attached questionnaire and return it to us as soon as possible. We will forward your responses to our members so that your position can be considered in their participation in the 2000 presidential elections. For your staff's convenience we have enclosed a duplicate set of these materials.

Many thanks in advance for your cooperation.

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMSincerely,
MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMNicholas E. Chimicles
